The Wiggle CX Sportive series returns for it’s next round with the South Downs Sting CX on Sunday 8th March. Interest in CX and mixed terrain riding is growing apace in all sectors of the cycling world, as riders discover the possibilities of a new generation of bikes.

CX Sportive events offer courses up to 80km in length, over a varied mix of terrain that blurs the boundaries between road and off road riding. Co organiser Martin Harrison describes the experience as a revelation and a revival at the same time. “Just riding whatever’s in front of you is nothing new, but it’s something that got lost a bit in cycling, as the type of bikes we rode and how we were supposed to ride them became more and more defined. But people are discovering the versatility of cross bikes, and a new generation of bikes designed to take you anywhere, and we’re all discovering the joy of just riding again. That’s our inspiration for CX Sportive. We want to create varied and challenging courses that let you ride the way you want to, and give you a fresh experience of cycling along the way”.

The South Downs Sting CX certainly delivers on those challenges, making full use of the muscular contours of the downs over back lanes, bridleways, farm tracks and the South Downs Way itself, before winding you back along a series of quiet valley lanes and tracks back to the finish. Full event support includes comprehensive route marking, back up maps and GPS files, well stocked feed stations, post ride catering and instant rider timing for those who care about their performance.

The event is suitable for CX (cyclocross) bikes, hybrids, XC MTBs, 29ers, or any bike capable of taking on a mix of surfaces. There are three distances from 50-75km to suite a range of abilities.
