International charity Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) is calling on the nation’s cycling enthusiasts to join them on the 2014 L’Etape du Tour and help raise funds for research into meningitis and septicaemia. The event will take place on 20th July 2014 and cyclists will face a 148km (91 mile) course between Pau & Hautacam four days before the Tour’s pelaton follow the same route as stage 18 of the 2014 Tour de France.

After leaving Pau, riders will take on one of the most prestigious climbs of the Tour de France, the Col du Tourmalet. This fearsome 17.1km ascent begins in Sainte Marie de Campan and has a gradient of 7.3%. After this the race descends towards Luz Saint-Sauveu, where riders will enjoy a flatter section of the route before the final challenge of Hautacam ascent. This 13.6km (8.5 mile) ascent has a gradient of 7.8%. and will be a true test for tired legs at the end of the course.

Sign up and you will experience the atmosphere and excitement of the world’s premier cycling event whilst being able to stay on and witness the pro riders taking on the challenge themselves. By joining the Meningitis Research Foundation’s cycling team you’ll receive free entry, fundraising and training guides and support in return for a pledge to raise a minimum of £750 in sponsorship.

Chris Head Chief Executive of MRF said: “Cycling has really taken off in recent years and we know many cyclists appreciate not just the physical challenge but the opportunity to raise money for charity as well. We want to encourage as many people as possible to join our team of 25 riders in the L’Etape du Tour – stage 18 of the iconic Tour de France. Bacterial meningitis and septicaemia affect around 3,400 people across the UK each year. They are easily mistaken for milder illnesses, can kill within 24 hours and may cause serious, life-long disabilities. All money raised will enable us to continue vital research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia, provide life-saving awareness information and support people who have lost a loved one or are struggling to cope with after effects.”
