EVENT SUMMARY

After a successful first year in 2012 the Etape Eryri returns for 2013 with Chain Reaction Cycles as the headline sponsor and exploring the most breath taking and scenic roads in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park.

ROUTE INFORMATION

A choice of three route distances are available –

  • Etape Mawr – 103 miles – is the biggie!  A monster 103 miles of awesome tarmac on climbs you never believed you could ride!  Are you tough enough to take on the Etape Mawr?
  • Etape Canol – 76 miles – comes in at 76 miles with some mega climbs to get your legs and your lungs burning.  Equally as beautiful but a little bit tougher than the bach.
  • Etape Bach – 47 miles – is the shortest route at 47 miles.  But don’t be deceived, this will be among the most gorgeous and challenging 47 miles you will ever ride.
  • Etape Teulu – 6.5 miles – a short family orientated ride on quiet roads

The routes will all start and finish in the same location at Castle Square, Caernarfon.  All routes will depart the square along St Helen’s Road and follow the Foryd to Saron.  Riders will then join the main A4085 and follow the old road to Groeslon and Penygroes.  At Penygroes the route will turn left and follow the Nantlle valley and over Drws y Coed Hill Climb Time Trial to Rhyd Ddu.  A right turn will take riders to Beddgelert, where the Etape Bach route will turn left and climb Nant Gwynant to Pen y Gwryd, turn, over the Llanberis Pass and descent to Llanrug.  A final ‘sting in the tail’ will take you over Ceunant to Waunfawr, descend to Caeathro, turn left to Bontnewydd and return to Caernarfon.  You will finish by cycling back along St Helen’s Road and enjoy circumnavigating the castle on your way back to the finish line on the castle square.

Etape Canol and Mawr riders will turn right in Beddgelert and proceed along the Aberglaslyn valley, turn left over the Aberglaslyn bridge and follow the road to Llanfrothen.  A left turn in Llanfrothen will take riders up ‘the wall’ to Rhyd and descend to Maentwrog.

At Maentwrog riders will turn left and follow the road to Ffestiniog, at this point the Etape Canol riders will go left to Blaenau Ffestiniog and over the Crimear Pass to Dolwyddelan and Betws y Coed.  From here to Capel Curig, Pen y Gwryd and over the Llanberis Pass following the same route as the ‘Bach 47’ to the finish in Caernarfon.

Etape Mawr riders will turn right in Ffestiniog and follow the A470 to Trawsfynydd.  A left turn in Trawsfynydd onto the A4212 follows a gorgeous valley to Arenig where you will turn left and follow the lovely B4391 and B4407 to Ysbyty Ifan.  A right turn here will lead directly to Pentrefoelas.  Cross the A5 and follow the beautifully scenic B5113 and B5427 all the way to Llanrwst.  Cross the valley and turn left at Gwydir Castle which leads you to Betws y Coed where you will pick up the same route as the ‘Etape Canol 76’ all the way back to the finish at Caernarfon Castle.

The approximate amount of climb for each route (according to map my ride data) is 1650 metres for the Etape Mawr, 1250 metres for the Etape Canol and 730 metres for the Etape Bach.”
