The Dragon Ride sportive has been awarded UCI Golden Bike status for 2012.

The UCI Golden Bike is a quality label that the International Cycling Union (UCI) awards to what they view as the best cycling for all events and is only awarded toevents deemed to have excellent organisation, sporting value and touristic interest being considered.

In 2011 5 events have been awarded Golden Bike status, De Ronde van Vlaanderen in Belgium, Quebrantahuesos in Spain, Cyclosportive L’Ariégeoise in France, Lapinarello Cycling Marathon in Italy and the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in New Zealand with a further two, one for Switzerland and one for South Africa to be confirmed.

The ultimate goal is for riders to complete all events over several years to achieve Gold Rider status which gets them an exclusive Gold Rider jersey and their name added to the UCI Gold Rider Hall of Fame.

With the Dragon Ride being added to the list for 2012 it’s the first time we get a Golden Bike event in the UK and it should see the already popular event be in even greater demand.
