After it’s launch in 2010 the Great Western Sportive has grown into a popular event attracting in the region of 1,000 riders. A choice of 3 routes starting from Swindon across the ancient Ridgeway and winding through the Marlborough Downs.
2014 sees the event move from its usual June date to take place in May.
A choice of 3 route options are available –
- Full – 101 miles (163km) with a height gain of 2036m
- Midi – 72 miles (117km) with a height gain of 1730m
- Short – 50 miles (81km) with a height gain of 1061m
“Rolling across the ancient Ridgeway and winding through the beautiful Marlborough Downs, the route is a real treat, with broad, open roads echoing the sweep of the scenery. The folds of the Downs provide the gradients to put you to the test, but this is a ride to reward you for every challenge, not beat you relentlessly into submission. A riders ride, if you will.
The full 107-mile challenge offers everything a classic sportive should have. Tough climbs followed by sweeping open descents across spectacular scenery, rolling valleys through idyllic villages and ridge routes offering views across a landscape that hasn’t changed much in the last thousand years.”
